I want to feel better.

Sometimes what hurts eventually heals. Sometimes it doesn’t.
I want to feel better.
Sometimes what hurts eventually heals. Sometimes it doesn’t.
In my master’s thesis on the spiritual aspects of chronic illness, I wrote, “Miraculously recover or die. That’s the extent of our cultural bandwidth for chronic illness.”
Decades later, it’s not much better. Where settler culture has little room for death, it has perhaps even less for lives lived between cure and catastrophe.
Then the New Age traded original sin for creating our own reality–a new take on victim-blaming. Neither leaves room for intergenerational trauma, systemic injustice, genetic conditions, or the unpredictability of being in form.
You may be living with physical illness, grief, trauma, emotional exhaustion, spiritual disconnection, or circumstances that simply aren’t going away.
You don’t need another promise that everything happens for a reason, or insistence that healing is just around the corner. What you may need is possibility, through animism.
Feeling better isn’t always about changing what’s happening, but changing how you’re in relationship with what’s happening. It’s tending your body instead of demanding performance. Your worth isn’t measured by your productivity or recovery any more than belonging depends on wellbeing.
At Soul Intent Arts, we explore practices that help us become better relatives to ourSelves, bodies, histories, communities, and the living world. That doesn’t replace medical care or therapy. It complements them by cultivating belonging, meaning, reciprocity, and discernment, especially when life doesn’t unfold the way we’d hoped.

You may find yourself here if…
- you’re feeling stuck and don’t know how to move
forward. - you’re living with chronic illness or pain.
- you’ve experienced trauma that continues to
shape your life. - you’re grieving a loss or a version of yourself.
- you’re spiritually exhausted or disconnected.
- you’re looking for a way to live well, even when
life remains difficult.
Sometimes the deepest transformation isn’t recovery.
Sometimes it’s learning to participate fully in a life that remains beautifully, painfully unfinished.
A Different Way of Looking at Your Experience

Where to
begin
Grief. Grief is a companion of chronic conditions. We don’t talk enough about the everyday losses that compound into a Self we don’t recognize.

You’re not
alone
Fifteen years of inquiries from readers whose lives were reshaped by chronic illness live in Undersong. Yours might be there, too. Find everything from the spiritsual roots and politics of illness, to the ancestral trauma our bodies carry.

How animism
fits
Not certainty. Not belief.
Animism offers new ways to be in relationship with illness, so that you can create a new worldview around belonging.

The next
step
Gaining trust in Self is your current challenge. Select field notes are listed below to help you take your next step.
