Traditional lore – Tiwaz represents elder god, Tyr, who sacrificed his hand to Fenrir to stave off Ragnarok, and through his son Mannas (Mannaz) saved humanity.
Animistic lore – Tiwaz is the rune of the heartsong not coming to fruition, and having to sacrifice it to find the way through. In Runic Book of Days, of Tiwaz I note, “With Tiwaz there is no thinking out of the box. There is no box. Believing that there is one is what we sacrifice. The rote path will not lead to contentment. If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a hell no.“
