The runes are such a tool, and in the Old Norse tradition, this process is wyrdweaving at it deepest potential. What’s a half-month rune?
“Half-month” is an astronomical concept in which each month is divided into two parts: days 1-15, then 16-month’s end. In terms of the runic calendar, each half-month rune is one of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, and governs for a tad over two weeks (14 and 1/4 days, or a fortnight).

The Weekly Rune is a three-rune cast. Those runes are the half-month, the intuitive rune, and the overview. The half-month is a set rune, which for the most part follows the traditional ordering of the Elder Futhark. The intuitive stave (meaning, I draw it blind) indicates the life force most available to us, to the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus. It suggests how we can best handle the half-month energies. The final rune (also drawn blind) provides a high overview of the current time, and speaks from different voices. These voices have been Nature, Earth, Creation, though are sometimes others. I note who’s speaking each week, as it is revealed.

The Runecast
Algiz has kept us on our toes over the last week with regard to working the skills required to stay tapped into our Nature Spirits. This week doubles down on that relationship, and demands that we be even more nuanced in how we perceive it. The challenge of active, actionable animism is significant in colonized culture. Apart from nothing in our day-to-day being set up to foster that kind of continual beingness, our synapses haven’t been cultivated to hold onto it. They can be, and I experience that we can tap into our lived memory of being, as well as that of our Ancestors. But it takes effort. It doesn’t just happen, and the act of regaining that state of being can be really triggering.
This week we’re asked to start doing what’s required to accomplish that awareness, and we’ve given pretty clear instruction on how to do it. Learn more about this seasonal progression, and how to draw its insights into the personal spiritual path in Runic Book of Days.
What does it mean?
Algiz, on the surface, is a very Midgard-level rune. It’s about being deeply aware of our Nature and home space, such that we embody it. What that really means is we realize we were never separate from it to start with, which brings a level of protection nothing else can. This protection is very literal, from the historic precedent of the elk and sharp elk-sedge. It can also be taken liminally, as in engaging those direct relationships. This week’s cast insists we have to be proficient at both in order to really stand our part of the watch, for ourselves and in reciprocity to our immdiate animistic community. Read more…
