How would you describe your work/path/art to a beginner?
I feel that my path is to translate the often complicated, or exclusive language of spirituality, and bring it to the mainstream. It’s for young people, people who are new to spiritual concepts, people who are isolated from spiritual thought by their upbringing or immersion in what I call ‘dumb culture’. I am the publisher of Soul Rocks books, which prints books for a new generation, including Kelley’s Teen Spirit Shamanism offering. My own books are aimed at a youthful, modern female audience, though I have a lot of male readers too!
How did this work call you? At what life stage?
I think I’ve always felt pulled towards spirit, and it was always going to happen. But I was about 28 when I realised this properly. I had been through a rough patch. I was partying way too hard and was lost in my appearance and living for the weekend. Revisiting my spiritual roots (my dad was a Wiccan high priest who had taught me healing, tarot, and spiritual thought from an early age) seemed to occur naturally. Before I knew it I was on some kind of journey from crazy party girl to happy hippy chick. I love writing and so I wrote about it, and the rest is history I guess!
Describe your experience of spirituality as a teen/young adult. Dr iscuss your blessings and challenges of that era.
Spirituality was a huge part of my teenage years. My dad went from being a Church of England vicar to quitting the church and becoming a pagan! He really included me in this when I visited at weekend. I would hang out with a room full of goths, punks and other goddess-worshipping folks. We would go on pagan picnics and include me in goddess meetings. Alongside the social aspect of hanging out with a bunch of alternative types I also learned tarot, meditation, energy healing, and had deep and meaningful conversations about the nature of life,death and everything Inbetween.
How does that experience speak through your work, today?
A lot of current spiritual writing focuses on how to get spirituality to work for us, through the law of attraction, angels, the secret, attracting abundance etc etc. My experiences make me want to go deeper than this. I’m fascinated more with the esoteric, etheric secrets of spirituality. I love exploring the idea of what comes after life. I think this is at the heart of all life’s big questions. It appeals to me far more than a sanitised version which simply helps you attract a new car! I guess I feel this world is an energetic hologram, it feels real, but it’s kinda not, it’s a temporary home for learning and progressing souls. The real deal comes after. That idea lights me up, the idea of sharing that thought and making it real is so exciting!
