Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

Nauthiz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

Nauthiz – Need – Anytime this Rune comes up in a cast, I think it’s appropriate to examine where we are standing in our own way. We interpret it commonly as need, though Nauthiz provokes thought of what holds us back, what little irritation do we complain and fret over, yet we cling to for some unconscious reason. What we say we don’t want is often the one thing we refuse to change. In that light, this Rune becomes more about constraint, what holds us back.

Nauthiz is related to the youngest of the Norns, Skuld, who is the keeper of what “should” be, which many interpret as the future. However, wordsmiths among us recognize ‘should’ as a modal auxiliary, indicating that outcomes manifest based on conditions met. In other words, we can set the dominoes up any way we like, and based on our knowledge, skill, and perhaps wisdom, they should fall the way we’ve planned. Yet there are always variables we can’t foresee. The dominoes will fall the way they fall, and we have only to react in the best way that we can.

Futhark_RSSx150Keep this relationship between need and fate in mind this week. So often what we think we need is connected to what we think should happen, what we should get. The appearance of Nauthiz isn’t suggesting that we will or won’t meet our need, but that we be positively certain we can handle what comes.  By that I mean, this Rune carries the ability to assist us in finding peace, regardless.

When we meet resistance in fulfilling our needs, do we respond compulsively just to make the tension stop? Do we buckle down and address the core issue?  Do we risk the reality of learning that our needs are really wants?  How we deal with this kind of stress is the heart of Nauthiz, as in learning to move through that stress, the need is either released or met.

Hold Self carefully this week. Test the confines in the places of strongest resistance and be honest about who’s really holding the reins.

Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

Nauthiz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

Nauthiz – Need – Have you noticed that the last time Nauthiz was the Weekly Rune, Mannaz came the week prior, as is the case this time? It’s not a coincidence, and I swear I have more than two Runes in my bag!

By now we know that Mannaz is about learning to call on support and finding mind/body/soul balance, and that Nauthiz encourages us to slow down and be sure of our process.  What does it mean that at this time we are being repeatedly called to be certain of our personal cosmology? That the way we order ourselves and observe how our order is supported by, supports, reflects, and fosters our authenticity? It’s a big question to ask.

So often we turn ourselves inside out to get into a routine that provides spiritual discipline, mental focus, physical strength, and emotional nourishment. Specifically, most of us don’t find that clarity without baptism by fire, without deep crisis prompting life change. We wouldn’t even look at ourselves at that level without deep personal emergency. Taking the step to take charge of our core wellbeing is perhaps the most important one we take in our whole lives. So then, how do we respond when the Universe asks us to change that routine, or to question its current relevance? We are used to questioning whether we’re in balance, not the method by which we sustain it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, yes?  The very idea that what works needs to change can generate crisis all its own.

This week gently consider where soul sustenance has become rote.  This is a bold undertaking from inside the comfort zone. We may gaze upon the scape of our spiritual discipline and see that it works fine, all is well, stability abides. Bless it, thank it, then look again. The message of repeated Mannaz then Nauthiz is that something somewhere in our personal spiritual path isn’t as it seems, even if that thing is reluctance to change the spiritual path. Recall, that which nourishes and guides us to expand our consciousness isn’t meant to be comfortable. It’s not meant for escapism. It’s meant to grow.

As you examine your personal spiritual path and find so much as a crack, address it now. This is your furlough of the soul. This is your opportunity to step back and find the glinting threads that bind your passion to your footsteps again, and find the way that meets your current needs in carrying it through everything you do.

This Runic duo heartily encourages us to use the resources at our disposal, to make the changes needed in our lives, however very personal and sacred.  This combination is saying that we can either make that change of our own volition–initiate controlled crisis–or the Universe will initiate one for us.

Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

Nauthiz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

Nauthiz – Need – There’s a pattern of receiving Nauthiz as the weekly Rune after having a wonderful reprieve or long-desired breakthrough.  Isn’t that just the way? Last week we had the ‘Green means go” support of Mannaz carrying us on its shoulders, now followed this week with Nauthiz’s firm but supportive, “Are you sure?”

The Rune of discontent and drive to change comes up now that we have a plan in mind, yet are waffling on following through. Nauthiz can’t tell us what direction to choose, or how to implement our choice. It can, though, shed significant light on all the soul checks that need to happen to be sure this is the right action.  The fact that this Runes comes up now indicates that something about our current plan isn’t right action.

This gentle caution doesn’t necessarily mean we have to go off the rails and start again from zero. Or does it? At the very least, walk around the frame. Kick the tires. Look under the hood. Make sure the details are covered as much as can be in awareness, and bless the ones that can’t.

Nauthiz comes down to basic economics. Humans are built to want more, whether it’s consciousness, money, or icecream.  Yet sooner or later, we all must learn that there is a balance between what we have, what we want, and how what we will do to get it affects us. We must first find that balance within ourselves, then realize there is a greater ledger of balance with All Things. Nauthiz is the scale upon which we weigh what we think we want and the effort it will take us to get it, against what we really want and can heartily enjoy having.

Take seriously that this yellow light may not mean stop or go. It may just be a reminder to slow down and pay closer attention.
