Traditional lore – Dagaz is an affirming omen of good things. It marks June Solstice, thus, imparts the feeling of transitions–our movement through a day, and through the cosmos.
Animistic lore – Dagaz speaks to changing states of being. It implies that as we move through a day we become changed versions of ourSelf, just as June Solstice evokes similar shifts. For this reason the symbolism of Dagaz is firmly implanted in human-person psyche and indicates positive change, evolution of Self and the cosmos, and hope. In Runic Book of Days, of Dagaz I state, “I call Dagaz the “So what?” rune. Yes, we’ve come this far! Yes, we did it! So what? Life doesn’t end. It doesn’t settle into some quaint closure, then the credits roll.”

Kelley Harrell is an animist, author, deathwalker, and death doula held by Tuscarora, Woccon, and Sissipihaw land.
