The Weekly Rune – Thurisaz

The Weekly Rune – Thurisaz

Thurisaz (carved Baltic amber) is the half-month rune through 13 August. Nauthiz is the intuitive rune (carved reindeer antler slice), and Raidho indicates Jargon’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Mink Vertebra with element Timing (hourglass), in the direction of Right (East/Austri-river dwarf), in the season of Winter (tree button). Read right to left is Thurisaz, Nauthiz, then Raidho.

The Weekly Rune – Thurisaz

Thurisaz is the half-month rune through 13 August. Berkana is the intuitive rune, and Uruz indicates The True Jotnar Heart of Humanity’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Pine Cone with element Air, in the direction of Above/Beyond, in the season of Winter. Read right to left is Thurisaz, Berkana, then Uruz.
Moving into Thurisaz this week shifts us from this formative physical and conscious space into shaping what we do with them. Thurisaz is the rune of quickening, which I talked about in the What in the Wyrd episode of Thurisaz as a rune. It is the point in the traditional Elder Futhark order that we assess the data coming in from physical, mental, and emotional levels, we generate awareness of sacred order, and we respond with urgency. We could even say with lightning speed.

This rune is everything Thor, which means it’s the point of our cultivation of righteousness and the capability of responding when that sense of divine order has been disrupted. Whether we commit some offense against it or someone else does, we feel it in our bodies and ontologically. Our whole being knows the infraction has happened, and we’re poised to respond. At this point in the Futhark progression, how we respond has everything to do with how well we’ve come into relationship with Fehu (body/force) and Uruz (unconscious/action).

The Weekly Rune – Uruz

The Weekly Rune – Uruz

Uruz is the half-month rune through 29 July, (carved lapis lazuli). Nauthiz is the intuitive rune, and Sowilo indicates Rupture’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Mink Rib with element Metal, in the direction of Back/South/Suðri, in the season of Spring. Read right to left is Uruz, Nauthiz, then Sowilo.
Uruz has us reaching into our wildness, the aspects of us that have never been and can never be domesticated. It sounds like a dangerous invitation on the surface, though through the relics of rituals we have from our northern Ancestors, they understood the need to be in relationship with inner utangardr. While great personal insight came up in this cast, the whole time I was listening to the various pieces and parts, I kept getting the memo that this runecast speaks more to the collective dynamic than to personal ones. In other words, it’s about the overall energy and transitions happening to the planet, which are informing our personal ones.

The thing about Uruz that has always stood out to me is that our wildness follows our tameness in the traditional ordering. Like some kind of reminder. “Don’t be too tame.” Fehu is our assets that must be managed, represented by cattle. They are domesticated. They cannot tend themselves. They require force. Uruz, though, is the aurochs, a wild creature that tends itself. Uruz is action. It may or may not flow accordingly; that’s not up to us. Even for Utharkists who place Uruz first, I feel like the opening tone of the Elder Futhark is that it takes relationship with both our discipline and our chaos to function well in this world. We can’t disregard either. In fact, our capability in navigating both sets the pace for our experience of the rest of the Futhark. And if we haven’t done that sitting with, by the time we get to Thurisaz and Gebo and Eihwaz, and even Tiwaz… Think about it. What does hardship look like without our cunning edge and knowledge? What about partnership? Or the entire log jam of the second aett? Not good, friends. Not good. And if we look at this from a collective vantage point, souling-in-form is getting a sharp upgrade. Even other-than-human forms are getting deep reunification with Beyond. I’ve got mini essays on that.

The Weekly Rune – Uruz

The Weekly Rune – Uruz

Uruz is the half-month rune through 29 July, (carved Baltic amber). Raidho reversed is the intuitive rune (carved reindeer antler slice), and Othala indicates Believing’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Barred Owl with element Flesh, in the direction of Above, in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Uruz, Raidho reversed, then Othala.

Moving into Uruz this week pushes things into new territory. Well, okay, not new to us, but new for this cycle. With Fehu we begin the cycle with a very grounded, tending of formed beingness, and Uruz ignites that with a little drama.

In fact, Uruz kind of is drama, of the primal variety. If Fehu is making sure we have the Midgard supports in place to soul-in-form, Uruz draws on the unconscious ones. It draws on the muddy, entwined roots that simultaneously anchor us into the ground and Beyond, into All Things. It is where our wild becomes metabolized into neurology, will, agency.

I’ve spent a lot of TWR talking about Uruz as our untamed inner power that the world can’t handle us wielding. I want to take that a little deeper in this cast.

This is the only rune associated with a named other-than-human being–Audumbla. Audumbla is the primordial feminine life force/Jotun/goddess/aurochs who was carried forward largely in oral tradition. She’s barely referenced in Gylfaginning in the Prose Edda, and that’s it. We have Ymir all over the place.

The Weekly Rune – Fehu

The Weekly Rune – Fehu

Fehu is the half-month rune through 14 July, (carved cedar stave). Berkana is the intuitive rune (Baltic amber), and Gebo indicates Indigeneity’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are World Ancestor (wooden spoon) with element Timing (hourglass), in the direction of Below (lapis lazuli), in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Fehu, Berkana, then Gebo.

I’ve talked about how our modern take on Fehu centers money, though this year’s runecasts with Fehu have totally thrown that aside. Where last week’s cast was flavored with joy and support from many corners, this one is all about humanity and where we stand.

Fehu means wealth, specifically assets that must be tended. It also expresses how we enter into a new cycle–with thoughts of what we have to bring to it, how we cultivate what we have to share, the idea that making sure we all have good Fehu increases everyone’s assets.

The Weekly Rune – Fehu

The Weekly Rune – Fehu

Fehu is the half-month rune through 14 July, fully in the sign of Cancer (carved porcelain tile). Wunjo is the intuitive rune, and Ingwaz indicates Mountain Jotnar’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Fossilized Belemnite with element Plastic (Little People Dog), in the direction of Beyond (world marble), in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Fehu, Wunjo, then Ingwaz.
The full runecast will be publicly available here, two weeks from publication. You can find it in full on Patreon, now.

Fehu is the time of rune that can be very bracing in terms of figuring out where we stand with it. Beginning this new cycle likely brings up lots of things–as any new cycle does–relief, fatigue, confusion, maybe excitement. Fehu represents assets that we must tend, which of course implies that we have assets to tend. In a modern context, we make assets all about money, which comes with all sorts of baggage that isn’t traditionally part of this rune.

The Weekly Rune – Dagaz – Fehu

The Weekly Rune – Dagaz – Fehu

Dagaz is the half-month rune through 29 June, at which point Fehu comes to the fore until 14 July. Ansuz is the intuitive rune, and Algiz reversed indicates Recommitment’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are the World Ancestors with element poison, in the direction of Beyond, the season of Autumn. Read right to left is Fehu above, Dagaz below, Ansuz, then Algiz reversed.

In accordance with this runic calendar, we close our time with the Elder Futhark in season. We’ve walked another year through the guidance of the runes, and with that go forward with shared experiences and communal space. I feel closure at this point in the year, partly because of the intensity of June Solstice, and because Dagaz imparts a sense of a change of course. I experience that Dagaz gap between extremes as a moment of calibration, albeit not always in ways that I want to be recalibrated.
