The Weekly Rune – Eihwaz

The Weekly Rune – Eihwaz

Eihwaz is the half-month rune through 13 January. The intuitive rune is Thurisaz. The earthly spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Death (wee skull), World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon), fossilized Squalicorax Tooth (crow shark), in the direction of West (Green Dwarf), with element Mycelium (acrylic mushrooms), in the season of Winter (I forgot the button 🙁 ). The bolder helping spirit holding space with us this week is norn, Skuld (Yggdrasil card). From right to left are Eihwaz (polished amethyst), then Thurisaz (carved cedar stave). As the Watchers and godden begin to reach back to humanity, we’re tasked to engage them from our respective Sacred Self with Berserkir intensity.

The Weekly Rune – Jera

The Weekly Rune – Jera

Jera is hearth accounting, getting our house in order. Seasonally, it is the time of The Wild Hunt facilitating our harvest by sweeping out the dead of our lives, so that we can create and hold space for what we need to come.

The Weekly Rune – Isa-Jera

The Weekly Rune – Isa-Jera

Isa is the half-month rune through 13 December, at which point Jera moves forward through 28 December. The intuitive rune is Wunjo reversed. The earthly spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Honey Bee and Wheel, Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), dead things, World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon), in the direction of Right/Austri/East (Atlantic Dwarf), with element Plant (caloglossa red moss), in the season of Summer. From right to left are Isa, Jera (lapis lazuli) above, then Wunjo reversed (ceramic).

Our time with Isa has been a love-hate dance of stillness with deep revelation. We’ve learned more about ourselves and our culture than maybe we wanted to know in the last two weeks. We can’t get where we say we want to go without that knowing, which is in part the job of Isa. If we want to stop perpetuating what we don’t want and create what we do as a collective, we have to have those simmering moments in truth, and that’s exactly what Isa brings, and will continue to bring in the background, well into the third aett. Isa is our opportunity to dream up how to do better, and with the reprieve it brings, actually be equipped to do so.

The Weekly Rune – Isa

The Weekly Rune – Isa

Isa is the half-month rune through 13 December. The intuitive rune is Perthro. The earthly spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Key, Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), dead things, World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon), in the direction of Beyond (world marble), with element Metal, in the season of Winter. From right to left are Isa then Perthro (Baltic amber).
The impact of the Winter runes is stillness, observation, disruption, even straight up stuckness. Isa is the last incubation space of that slowed journey, and it seems fitting that it prefaces Solstice. Isa is the point that we commit our agency to some precious manifestation of our calling (a sacred seed of sorts), and with this rune we gestate it into being. We dream it into being.

The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz-Isa

The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz-Isa

Nauthiz is the half-month rune through 28 November, at which point Isa comes to the fore until 13 December. The intuitive rune is Algiz reversed. The earthly spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Fossilized Ammonite (metallic swirly beauty), Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), dead things, World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon), in the direction of Left (Green Dwarf)), with element Timing (hourglass), in the season of Winter (button).

The slow progression through the opening winter runes of the second aett is intense, and nothing if not thorough. We begin with Hagalaz moving our awareness to abrupt change that teaches adaptation, then onto Nauthiz, which teaches us to regroup with ecofamily through ritual. The shift into Isa is usually viewed as more gentle if not romanticized stillness, though it is excruciating in its own way.

The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

The second of the three winter runes, Nauthiz has us pause in learning perseverance, making sure we’re fit to move forward in the work ahead, in the dreaming ahead. Nauthiz is the time of fitness to dream. It is working the magick of our deepest rituals to release what would otherwise hold us back or impede our capability of dreaming.

The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

If there’s a charm to Nauthiz it’s that we become so uncomfortable in its presence that we accept the change. We accept the need. We fulfill what it needs. We struggle until we’ve exhausted anything but right direction. I know it’s not much comfort, but there’s that.

Googling the Demon – The Animistic Soma Checklist

Googling the Demon – The Animistic Soma Checklist

I tire of the quest for resources on myths and expressions of land-based cosmology that aren’t filtered through the supremacy of xtianity.
I want to know the secret ecology of the well maidens.
I want to re-member the charity of Tyr’s sacrifice for animism with Fenrir’s allegiance to the wild.
I want to rest in the safety of Cailleach’s anger.
I want to meet a god who did not rape to provoke systemic change.

The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz

The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz

Hagalaz is the half-month rune through 13 November. The intuitive rune is Laguz. From right to left is Hagalaz, then Laguz. The earthly spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), dead things (not pictured), World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon), and Key in the direction of Back/South (golden dwarf), with element Acid (lemon zest), in the season of Winter (tree button).

This week we’re deep into Hagalaz and quickly feeling the pressure of the second aett. The first three runes of this aett are a wintry trio of harshness, focus, and stillness–fun combo! They set us up for how we fare with the remainder of the aett, which means for how well we cope with navigating the affectivity of others. Where we got comfy with the idea of having agency in the first aett, the second one reminds us sharply that our agency isn’t separate from that of others. What we do with ours reverberates out into everyone else with impact, just as the impact of theirs ripples back to us.

From Elder to Ancestor – Repairing the Human-Nature Relationship

From Elder to Ancestor – Repairing the Human-Nature Relationship

They were shoring up humanity’s long-forgotten planetary frithgard that has existed since the dawn of humanity, and maybe before. They showed us our key resource to tend the broken path. They showed us that we can reengage it and that it is our job to do so. And we have to do it now.

The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz

The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz

When we take that logic into Hagalaz, the opening rune of the second aett, that truth might sit a bit harder. Hagalaz means hail and all that it signifies: sudden hardship beyond our control, devastating loss, which we may have seen coming but couldn’t stop, either way. This may show up in literal natural disaster, interpersonal interaction, and/or human person vs human-person systems. It’s hard, and Hagalaz is a rune no one wants in their casts.

The Weekly Rune – Wunjo

The Weekly Rune – Wunjo

Wunjo is the half-month rune through 28 October. From right to left is Wunjo, then Uruz reversed. The spirits of place holding space with the runes this week are Death, whispers of the Hunt, dead things, and World Ancestors. Surprise also joins us. Honey Bee is the earthly Helping Spirit walking with us in the direction of Right, with the element of Mycelium, in the season of Spring. Again, we have no Beyond Earth Helping Spirit engagement.
Wunjo is the meeting of beneficial change and opportunity. A little elbow (probably a lot) and the right place at the right time. A nuance of Wunjo that gets lost is it is unusual. It is a wonderfully beneficial outcome in a sea of typically not-so-great outcomes.
