Traditional lore – Berkana traditionall represents the birch tree, though is reflected as a different tree across rune poems. It carries the lore of sustaining through hardship.
Animistic lore – Berkana is one of the few ‘pause’ runes not occurring at the end of an aett. It occurs after the ordeal of Tiwaz, and implies a state of being tended, to process the grief of Tiwaz. It is the state of preparing the Self to return to community, renewed. In Runic Book of Days, of Berkana I note, “Carrying the message of “dues paid,” with Berkano we can begin again.”

as well as the birthing of our wisdom from ordeal to community.
