Real Wyrd – A Modern Shaman’s Roots in the Middle World

Real Wyrd - A Modern Shaman's Roots in the Middle World by S. Kelley HarrellReal Wyrd – A Modern Shaman’s Roots in the Middle World

Available at Amazon.

For years, as we neared Samhain and The Dead Time I’ve shared my true encounters of the supernatural. Experiences from waking to deathwalks in the night to seeing apparitions in the middle of the day, you name it and I’ve brushed up against it, whether I meant to–or not so much.

In Real Wyrd – A Modern Shaman’s Roots in the Middle World I’ve compiled revised editions of all of the stories that appeared on my blog, along with never-before-published updates to those stories, and several recent encounters.

Not your usual bump-in-the-night true paranormal accounts, these trips into the Middle World aren’t always scary. Some are sweet, some are affirming. Regardless, some I’d like to never have again, yet all of them changed me in a way that I never looked at myself or Life the same, after.

As a lifelong intuitive and shaman by choice for two decades, not all of my experiences with the spirit world have had clear-cut direction, instruction, or even results. Every one of them, though, has had meaning. It’s not my way to just dabble in the supernatural for only the sake of stirring the mystical pot. Instead, I approach such as an opportunity to learn about life out of form, and be of some kind of service to spirits in need. Working with the other side of death equips me better this side of life. There are many spiritual books on working with the dead and discarnate, though most of them only extol the wonder and awe of that work. They don’t talk about the toll it takes on their personal lives, or of perils they faced learning to be healthy conduits for spirits. Indeed this work is wonderful and awesome, but it can also be scary, disorienting, and uprooting. I share these accounts of paranormal exploration as part investigation, part curiosity, and part luck of the draw of being a human equally aware of her soul.

Weekly Rune – Tiwaz

Tiwaz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Tiwaz – Tyr/Thor/Tuisto– At the risk of being repetitive, this week’s Rune is again Tiwaz.   As you recall from last week, Tiwaz is about second winds. It’s about realizing that best-laid plans and heart-centered dreams just are not going to be, and pulling it all out of the fire at the last second with fantastic success. This week’s reiteration of Tiwaz is optimistic in that it means we’re on-course.  We’re doing the work and creating the space needed in order to choose the best direction that we can for ourselves.

This is the time to fully integrate internal gifts with external support, which can only be done with steady, even, effort. Our most advantageous tool for integrating these facets of being are by using the breath. When we become aware of how we breathe and control it with focused awareness, we become fully present. We become a streamlined effort to breathe, move, do.

That’s not to say to take that we can take creative breath lightly. In this case, the inhale Tiwaz presents right before the primal scream is the etheric foundation for everything we want to create right now. This is the time to dream in vivid detail, full color. Experience what is wanted in the imagination, so that it can shape around us in form. This is how we create sacred space with ourselves, guides, totems, allies, deities, Source, to manifest our heart’s desires.

The caution here is not to let that deep inhale take too long before breathing out action. So often when under duress we hold our breath. We find safety in the stillness, the control, the silence. Etherically, when we linger in the imagination our efforts become escapist.  Yes, we’ve shifted the vibe, our direction, our desires.  We’ve tapped into a deeply uplifting and supportive current.  Sometimes, many times, actually, that support can feel so good after flailing in the stream for so long that we are tempted to just lie back and keep floating.

Not an option.  Don’t waste this second wind.  Stay with it and see change through.  No matter how safe and secure–or even motivating–it feels to stay in that creative void space, don’t avoid putting brilliance into action.  That’s what all of this shifting has been about.  That’s why all the upheaval and work.

The visions, feelings, and instincts visiting now are right-on.  This continuation of the battlecry is neither a reprieve, nor a stall.  Longer time with Tiwaz presents us the opportunity to imagine it all as precisely desired, and lay the plan to bring it into being.

Weekly Rune – Tiwaz

Tiwaz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Tiwaz – Tyr/Thor/Tuisto– Yes! This Rune radiates such great movement and follow through, I don’t even know where to start. Last week was a doozy of conflicting energies, clashing needs, and highlighted areas for improvement. For some of us, Tiwaz likely means that we’ve set a new course and have already sailed victoriously off into the sunset. The rest of us are still rowing, which despite the dogged hard work is better than being up shit creek with no paddle–as things have felt for a bit.

I love this Rune. Every time it comes up in a spread it brings such a sigh of relief that words just can’t do justice. Sure there are other, more joyful Runes. I resonate so deeply with Tiwaz because it’s related to having survived, and the shift into thriving. A phrase I learned in conjunction with Tiwaz is ‘the battlecry that awakens the second wind.’ Tyr (Thor) refers to Tuisto, the legendary god, who when pressed to survive and preserve mankind, sacrificed his hand to the fiendish Fenrir. He couldn’t save his people. The result was Tuisto’s creation of another iteration of the human race.

The message here is that from dire straits amazing outcomes are born. In other words, Plan A is clearly not working. Stop trying to force it, even if heart desires are tied into it. Realize this truth for what it is, stop doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome. It’s time to implement Plan B.

No Plan B in mind? Tuisto didn’t have one, either, because he couldn’t fathom not saving his people. Though heartbroken, he made found his way to move through on the fly, which is what made it work. Most often we are at our greatest point of power when we feel powerless. When we feel powerless we are hindered by nothing, because that’s precisely what we have to lose. Absolutely nothing stands in our way, but ourselves.

Now is the time to formulate the new direction. Everything in the cosmos is shining a light on the best way to break out of old patterns and move forward, screaming like crazy, hair blazing. I know there’s still some residual frustration, if not rage, guilt, sadness, about things not turning out as planned. But they’re not going to. Have the tantrum. Melt down in grand style, and let it go. The etheric fuel built up from this battlecry feeds the inhale that allows the new direction to come in. Tiwaz means that Plan B is The One. Whatever brainstorm lights through, go with it, because that’s the one that’s going to change circumstance and return power, enlightenment, inspiration–whatever is needed.

This is the week to give in, let go, and dig in to carry out the new outcome. Call on every guide, deity, totem, guardian available, and ask for their support and assistance. Most of all, let us drop the façade and engage our true selves.

Weekly Rune – Mannaz

Mannaz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Mannaz, upright

Mannaz – human– It’s probably no surprise that the week is setting up some interesting challenges. Mannaz is about how we connect with people, and in some cases mortality, the experience of being human. Reversed, as it is in this reading, we are challenged to consider how our formed experience is currently playing out.

Specifically, don’t expect any help right now. Whatever is going on, it’s not going to be resolved this week, but it’s possible to gain valuable insight about the dynamic. Hold the heart focus very gently this week. A concern of Mannaz reversed is overthinking, overprobing, becoming so involved that focus is lost.

As Mannaz is about humanity, it’s a Rune that particularly calls out our animistic roots. Indeed, we are our best vantage point of experience in form, yet we are not limited to ourselves. We are all connected; thus, we can step out of our personal experience and observe from collective insight. This is expressly the awareness that Mannaz reversed encourages. Now is not the time to sink into a singular, isolated, possibly egotistic viewpoint. In fact, it would be quite counterproductive to do so. Take the time to learn how allies see the situation–and I don’t mean polling friends on the best move to make. I mean, ask Source to show Its perspective of the situation. Ask a totem to share its insight on things. Become the wind and feel how significant this heart concern is from its observation.

Our charge this week is to get ourselves out of the equation, and appeal to wider, more aware sources to expand our viewpoints on what matters to us most.

Weekly Rune – Thurisaz

Thurisaz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Thurisaz – thorn– Over the last week I’ve been reading forecasts for this week with one eye shut, partly due to the US election, and partly because on Election Day Mercury turns retrograde. When retrograde, Mercury makes communication a mire of miscommunication, thus, misinformation, which as a result creates discord interpersonally. It is generally advised not to sign contracts during this retrograde, as well as to fact check, then fact check again. Thurisaz generally indicates a thorn, beauty cloaked in prickly protection, an image quite suited to the dicey dynamics of this week. Reversed, as in this reading, it means a great deal more.

Many relate Thurisaz to the giant Norse god Thor, an aptly ascribed image of protection and power. This third Rune in the first aett indeed tells much along the human journey into form, presenting the point at which we begin to distinguish ourselves as distinct from Source–not separate from, but distinct from. We are beings of passion, life force always uniting us with All That Is, which is the setting of Thurisaz. In Old Icelandic mythology, this connection and its power stemmed from the Giants, whose primal nature rumbles in us as kundalini, which can simmer or blast us into active participation.  Anyone who’s worked with kundalini knows it’s volatile stuff, and meted finesse wins over furiously forced success.

Indeed, Thurisaz is about overcoming the thorns along our path, though it also cautions us to heed the places where pain is inevitable in forward movement.  It can’t be avoided, though this reversed position indicates that it can be gracefully scaled.  As long as we recognize that this is not the time to stubbornly push forward, but to breathe through life force and discern the best path for the moment, how we free ourselves from our thorns will leave us better informed and intensely more aware.

Blessings upon us all this wild week.

Weekly Rune – Ingwaz

Jera - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Ingwaz (or Inguz) – People of Ing – After a few months of churning through this cycle of change and questioning our skills to move through it, finally it’s done. Ingwaz symbolizes that our wisdom prevails over external challeng.  In short: where there is a will there is a way.  This part is finished.

Ingwaz is in the third aett, also called Tyr’s aett. What is significant here is that Tyr refers to Tuisto, the legendary god, who when pressed to survive and preserve mankind, sacrificed his hand to the fiendish Fenrir. The result was Tuisto’s creation of another iteration of the human race, among them–you guessed it–the People of Ing (also the Herminones for you Harry Potter fans, and the Istaevones). The message here is that from dire straits amazing outcomes are born.

This outcome likely doesn’t look as expected. Strike that–it most certainly isn’t what was expected at all.  The thing is, even if the outcome hasn’t readily presented itself yet, take heart in the wisdom that this cycle has completed.  Not only are we greeted with that good news, but with the comfort of knowing a new, brighter cycle is beginning.  With that knowledge we can rest in new wisdom and inner guidance.

Ingwaz is what I call a ‘hinge’ Rune, in that it’s about that tiny space–or maybe nonspace–between Here—> and <—There.  It’s not so much about the events themselves, where we started, or where we end up.  It’s about how the whole process changed us inside.  It’s about finding that well of nonspace, the inner Void where we create ourselves every day, and conscientiously, intentionally beginning that creation process again.

Samhain Stories – Saturn’s Gift

Real Wyrd - A Modern Shaman's Roots in the Middle World by S. Kelley HarrellEvery year on Intentional Insights I share some of my more charged, spooky, Samhain Stories. This year I am releasing a collection of such encounters in Real Wyrd – A Modern Shaman’s Roots in the Middle World, to give further insight into my experiences.

As a lifelong intuitive and neoshaman by choice for over two decades, not all of my experiences with the spirit world have had direction, instruction, or even clarity. Every one of them, though, has meaning. Working with the unseen of the earthly realm is an opportunity to learn about life out of form, and be of some kind of service to spirits in need. Working with the other side of death equips me better this side of life.

This story marks one of the most challenging experiences I’ve had as an intuitive, and certainly one of the saddest times in my life.  It gives a classic yet modern glimpse into what I call the tribeless modern mystic, as only a gift from an ancient God can–Saturn’s Gift.

Weekly Rune – Jera

Jera - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Jera – Harvest – Many Rune enthusiasts likewise view Jera as “year,” in the understanding of the sun cycle–dreaming, planting, cultivating, reaping, benefiting, giving, dreaming again. When Jera comes up in a cast, the emphasis of that cycle is the harvest, or accounting.

In short, finally there’s payoff! The steps we found the courage to take last week gave us movement, brought clarity, and have challenged us to accept our success. Jera comes at the time that we have reaped the benefits of hard work and find ourselves in a position to make choices in how we move forward with this abundance and awareness.

Here’s the thing: Jera is walk don’t run energy. We’ve just come through a major transformation and finally allowed ourselves to enjoy the good things it gifted us. This isn’t the time to sink into frivolity or drop the momentum. One of the hardest things to do after success is to sustain the pace–neither speed up nor slow down. Hold steady.

In order to maintain evenly, at the end of harvest there are certain acts in which we should engage. Foremost are expressions of gratitude. To make the process really magickal, write them down. Draw them. Be specific, richly detailed. When we artistically convey our dreams into form, our success has become art. We create a physical manifestation of our hard work. Art lives on. It keeps creating, giving.

Likewise, determine what of this prosperity can be spent–that is, re-invested into what helps you sustain momentum now. What part of it must be stored for next year’s planting? What part can be tithed to others in need?

Be realistic. Jera isn’t about pie-in-the-sky expenditures or fist-clenching conservation. It indicates the time to truly, deeply assess where we are on every level of being. Jera encourages us to celebrate our accomplishments, then ground into the plans of what we most want to grow next. In that way, we’re not just reacting to a cycle; rather, we become an active participant in its process.

Jera is the time for gentle movement and radical self-honesty. Reward yourself, preserve yourself, and keep dreaming.

Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

Nauthiz - Intentional Insight's Weekly Rune by S. Kelley Harrell

Read right to left, Nauthiz and Laguz, reversed

Nauthiz – Need – We keep seeing this Rune, yes? Week before last Nauthiz came up, and we saw it a few weeks before that. This repetition indicates circling around a need that is unfulfilled, that must be filled before movement is possible.

To clarify the essence of this need I drew a second Rune–Laguz – Water. Laguz is the mutable, emotional element, the realization of abundance, the indicator of All Things flowing as Nature intends.

In this reading, Laguz is reversed, which means we’re holding back from what feels right. The only motivator powerful enough to interfere with intuitive rightful action is fear. Our nature is to drift in the stream.  Our only task is to stay aligned with our authenticity and continue making choices in support of that wild self. The stream carries us down the array of options.

The only reason anyone ever swims against the current is because they feel unsupported by it. Swimming against the flow is demanding, and in its own right scary. The fright of feeling that the elements are against us only compounds the original fear that led us to question right movement. It becomes a PTSD reaction that locks us in.

When we feel the Multiverse isn’t supporting us, we question our ability to meet our own needs. We doubt ourselves, which causes us to withhold our abundance.

My mother says, “Water seeks its own level.” It can’t be lost. It can’t be withheld, at least not for long. Water will always return to its source, and source is home. The same is true for our ever unfolding path of making choices. We can’t make a wrong choice. All we can do is continue making the best choice from the options we have available at any moment.

This reading encourages us to examine what has us disillusioned, and because of the relationship between Nauthiz and Laguz in this spread, this particular hindrance is known. We aren’t working against a mystery foe.  We’ve done the work to cull out what the fear is. The job now is facing it, blessing it, then setting it down and walking away.

What we need is right in front of us–Nauthiz assures this. Closing the distance (inches, not miles) to claim it lies in our ability to let the flow carry us toward that fulfillment.

We are bigger than our fears. When we can face them, release them, and relax back into the stream, our needs are met. As we go through this week, let’s hold ourselves gently and keep moving.

Surrender. You really will be OK.
