For the week of 19 July 2015
This week, behold the change and step into its wisdom.
This week begins with the shift from Berkano as the half-month rune, to Ehwaz. With its emphasis on purpose and that of our intuitive stave, Hagalaz, the suggestion of dramatic change in consciousness prevails, this week.
I’m so happy to see these runes, I could cry. I mentioned last week that having Berkano on the horizon as the half-month influence was inspiring; however, its predecessor, Tiwaz, was no joke. The fact that Wunjo blesses us with joy this week is just sweet bliss.
I am in love with the runes greeting us this week. While half-month Tiwaz continues championing our new strategy to meet our needs and bring a heart matter to a close, Gebo indicates satisfying, rewarding balance.
Of course, we all know that satisfaction rarely resembles what we imagined when we began its process of creation. Specifically, while the outcome of a project or undertaking may be exactly what we set out to do, we, ourselves are not. During such progressions we grow. Our desires change, our needs, and maybe more than any of those, our perspective changes.
So while we are likely putting into place exactly what we meant to this week, we may not still want it. There is a trickster element to Berkano, in that it deals with deep feminine power, primal chaos that alters the manifestation process as we grow with it, as it becomes. In this way, this Rune ties to Loki’s mother, Laufey, the fir tree.
Through that connection, shades of Winter Solstice flicker in Berkano, interesting foresight, given that we are upon The Dark Time. Berkano is the spark to keep in mind as we enter the coming time of stagnation, processing, and allocation of resources.
Truly potent things are brewing. Stay with the process of their development, and carefully tend their needs, as well as your own. Likewise, bless the path behind you, and realize that all of new life is ahead.
Berkano – Tree – How wonderfully appropriate to draw a sigil of spring, as the Northern Hemisphere approaches warmer climes. Having survived the cold and dark winter, we greet this message of ‘dues paid.’ We can begin again.
Associated with the Goddess, or Feminine Divine, keep the focus on ideas, projects, and plans you are birthing this week. This second Rune of the final aett follows Tiwaz, connected with Tyr, or Tuisto. Tuisto’s legacy is two-fold. Having sacrificed his hand to save humanity, he realized with deep anguish that he couldn’t save his people. The result was a heart-wrenching and abrupt change of plans, resulting in the creation of another iteration of the human race. How natural that Sacred Mother Berkano follow the birth of this new people, not only to nurture their survival and guide their growing consciousness, but to heal their father, Tuisto, in his time of need and restoration.
Truly potent things are brewing. Stay with the process of their development, and carefully tend their needs, as well as your own. This week is about caregiving what you are becoming, and being willing to accept the resources that support you in that endeavor. Likewise, bless the path behind you, and realize that all of new life is ahead.
When I decided to offer Winter Soulstice readings to clients, I did a general Rune reading of the life force, itself, how it’s shifting, what that means for the planet. After years of culling through what the Mayans say is happening now, what everyone else says, and taking my own feelings of it into consideration, I call the current state a ‘hinge time.’ We’re living at a time when many things are changing–things that really haven’t changed in thousands of years in how humans occupy space here. It only seemed balanced to hear the Runes’ perspective on this time, and as always they affirm and surprise.
When I read the Runes as a spread, I determine what spread I’m going to use first. There are many variations, and I go with the one that best lends meaning to my intention. When I’m doing a quick spread, I generally draw three Runes, the first one as the center, or focus at present, the next Rune as what came before, and the final Rune as the support available to foster the best outcome of the present. The center Rune is the main focus. The next Rune is actually the “first” Rune, and it’s placed to the right, while the final Rune would be placed to the left.
As I rifled through what spread would be the best one to use for this Solstice reading, I came up with nothing. I was led to just draw.
As the first Rune that came was Wunjo, I placed it as the focus of the present. Berkano came next. They are shown here, read right to left.
Berkano means tree, the specific type depending on cultural interpretation of various iterations of the Hávamál. The overall meaning of Berkano is fruition, work that has yielded beneficial outcome and is now complete. Wunjo means joy, the state in which we are aligned with what we wish and the ability to create it.
My habit was to reach for a third and final Rune, though each time I let the cool staves rustle over my fingers, I felt nothing, no resonance urging me to go further. The significance of that abbreviated gesture seems to be aligned with exactly the energy of this Solstice, and with the message of this reading. Stay in the present. Go with what is. There’s no need to push.
In short, through the Runes this transition speaks itself:
Dues are paid. Make a wish.
